Donata Wenders - Portrait Inspiration

All images copyright Donata Wenders

The first work I discovered of Donata Wenders were the images taken of Cuba during the filming of husband, Wim Wender's film Buena Vista Social Club. I was  mesmerized at first glimpse. Her wonderful use of light and shade made for powerful images.

On the way to my camera shop months back I had the great fortune to stumble upon her exhibition Donata: Islands of Silence at the Polka Galerie in the Marais.

I was in love!! Velvety images of women, famous and unknown photographed in quiet moments with an incredible sensitivity and beauty. Images of quietness that I aspire to!

Bono said of her images "These images feel eternal to me, like they were always going to happen. She brings that kind of vision to the here and now. She knows her subjects, it's hope itself. These stills have her grace and composure."

Those words have stayed with me and I carry them when I try and take a portrait "she knows her subjects, it's hope itself"! Man, that is something to aspire too..

Merci Donata for such beauty. So much to learn from your images.

  3. These are so moody and beautiful. I have a self-portrait project this week, and I'd say that these photos are inspiring, but I'm not worthy!
