Photographing and Working with Women

I have always adored photographing women. When I look back at the first photos I took at photography school they are of women friends that I convinced to dress up and be my models all a little fashion inspired. I even managed to convince one dear friend to walk out into the streets of Florence at night in just a bustier, stockings, high heels and lots of attitude! My enthusiasm was way ahead of my camera skills but I hoped they would catch up in a hurry.

Why do I like shooting women??

1. There are so many reasons but one of them is that I totally relate to women and I know how one can feel so vulnerable in front of the camera.

2. Wardrobe and hair! Ok I may sound a little shallow but god I love what a great hair and make up artist and a rockin wardrobe can do!  It allows us to be transformed, to forget who we are and slip into the role of  'the other us' and totally let go. Give me ten foot hair, smoky eyes  and a glass of champagne and even I am running to the other side of the camera.

3. All those moods that men complain about are wonderful inspiration for the camera. The camera loves moods!! All of them.

4. Fun.. Women are plan good fun to shoot and sorry guys when that couture gown is swooshing across the parquet floor boards or the long hair is flying around there is plenty to be happy about.

The above shot was taken in about 5 minutes. I used a white wall as the background (all of about 1.5 m2) to create a simple studio look. My beautiful model had to bob down to catch the last rays of natural light coming through the window. The wardrobe was inspired by the 'circus ringmaster' and my camera adored this beauty who was magic to work with...

Who/or what do you like shooting?

  1. I am no a professional and women / fashion shots would be way beyond my skill ... but I love shooting People ... in the parks, in the streets, in the playgrounds .. street people, kids, moms with kids and then there are the dogs ..
We won't talk about my constant stopping to photograph a tree .. You see, I live in a place where the trees are amazing and I find them to be excellent subjects. ( they stand still for you too ! )
Maybe if a woman stood at the bottom of a tree I would manage a good photo of her :)

  11. Shooting people is a unique skill, and it's not just about the camera skills but the ability to get your subject to relax. You've certainly mastered both skills - it's something I'd love to start to learn but so far I've stuck with mostly landscapes (and lots of photos of my kids & grandkids).

  12. I absolutely love to shoot my friend Jasmine because she is such regular human being right, but when I shoot her and look at the finished product, she is soooo effortless and her movements are super fluid! Crazy beautiful individual! It is always a pleasure!

  13. love love love nudes, the majority of my folio while at college was of nudes both male and female. While you were having fun dressing them up I was having them take it all off...

It's always been people for me, and now of course my children are a constant source of joy and photographing them is like trying to herd cats! My 9 year old daughter loves to dress herself up, doing hair and if she can get away with it a bit of Mum's makeup and then dissapears to return with the camera full of self portraits (I must tell her how to use the self timer)...

It seems I just have a passion for photography and it's rubbed off on the kids!

  19. Hi Carla, love the new look blog by the way! I love to shoot women especially pregnant ones and mothers with newborns, also love children and all naturale with natural light and not set up if possible. Just did a photo shoot with a lady who is about to have a baby any day and she looks devine in my garden amongst the lavender and foxgloves. We also did some shots with my black frilly parasol as a kind of foil for a hat and side profile she looks angelic! I just love photography xx Corrina.
