Anyone buying a house would have heard their real estate agent recommend that they should always go for 'Location, Location, Location'!
I have overheard real estate agents convincing buyers to buy the worst house in the best street rather than the best house in the worst street!
Everytime I prepare a shoot this little phrase pops into my mind. I'm humming to myself and wracking my brains about 'location, location, location'. I have learnt just like the real estate agent that the backdrop of your photo and the details in it bring an instant ambience and mood - it says a lot.
One of the first things I do when planning a fashion or portrait shoot is to track down the best location possible that will suit the style of the shoot I have in mind whether it is indoors or outdoors.
This pic was taken in the glorious George V hotel in Paris and what a glorious location!!
Tell me about some of your favourite locations if you have a minute.

Really like these monochrome shots you are putting up at the moment.
ReplyDeleteIt must be fun to plan a fashion shoot from start to finish, including scouting out the location. A lot of work, but a joy. I imagine.
ReplyDeletedo not know any better location than George V.. quite impressive
ReplyDeletemy favorite location is the street, but I am a beginning photographer and do not do any mise en scene..

beautiful pic carla. looking forward to your new book too - i'm a huge fan of Italian Joy.
ReplyDeleteHi Carla,
ReplyDeleteThis picture is sublime! It's all there and more!
Being the amateur photographer that I am I like gardens and misty locations. Living on the Gold Coast in Australia the usual sunny day bleaches faces and backgrounds so I need to find some shadows. If I could choose though I'd go for old places, cobblestones, rose covered walls, churches, dim cafes, that sort of location. Beaches are pretty boring after a lifetime of them.

Hi Carla,
ReplyDeleteAs renovators we are constantly aware of "Location"...I always love a sense of age to a location for photography. Peeling layers and subtle color....I sent you a photo I found some time ago which instantly came to mind.
I also once stayed at the Hotel Meurice in Paris which was incredible,a friend at college did a glorious behind the scenes series at the Opera.
I love the detail in your locations and the thought given, ciao lisa
Carla, Carla, Carla! I loooove your pics at the moment- if this is any indication of your new book I can't wait- just pre-ordered my copy down here in OZ. I have a couple of fav locations to shoot. My garden at home is pretty special and so is my house as it is mudbrick with very old windows and doors- not unlike some French provincial maison, my sons upstairs bedroom doubles as my studio as it is ceiling to floor white and has beautiful light. Also as I am still learning and honing my skills I know the light well and which time is the best at home so I can be sure of the results to a point. My other favourite place is one of the many beautiful and unspoilt beaches of Jervis Bay (where I live). PS I am loving your posts about how you do things and what you look for- its inspiring me and getting me offmy butt and back behind the lense again! merci beaucoup xxCorrina.
ReplyDeleteSince I'm a full-time software engineer my favorite locations are wherever I'm at! I do sometimes plan a weekend hike or trip for photo opportunities, but that's simply figuring out where may look nice depending on the weather and time of year. That is a fantastic location for your shoot, it makes for an exquisitely beautiful photograph.
ReplyDeleteand what a magnificent location!! Very striking photograph.

ReplyDeletegreat images and great location Carla! My favourite location is Italy ;-) Any place any time...
ReplyDeleteHi Carla,
ReplyDeleteWonderful photo with great composition. Love the angle of the models body.
My favourite location is the street I live in in Brisbane. It's inner city and has a touch of Italy with it's Italian residents. My neighbour still sits on her doorstep sometimes doing her needlework and until recently her and her husband could be seen crushing grapes for their home-made wine. All this within walking distance of the CBD.
I've had it on my mind to take some photos like they used to once where the owners stand formally out the front of their house. Just think it would be great for future generations.
Thanks again for sharing.
Regards,
Linda
Hey Carla! I like your pics a lot! I added your blog to my favorite blog list! :-) I just figured out how to do it. Greets from Toronto, Dana (vanilladaydreams.com)
ReplyDeleteVery elegant shot Carla...as you say, a glorious location. I like a 'crumbled' elegant but natural location..could be a train station, a ruin, a garden, a window, wrought iron railing, a beach...so many possibilities. You are a star Carla!
