Elizabeth Gilbert on nurturing creativity | Video on TED.com

Elizabeth Gilbert on nurturing creativity Video on TED.com

This morning a great friend of mine and creative, Wayne Chick sent me this link to Elizabeth Gilbert on Ted. I had 20 mins to spare and as Madame Gilbert is one of my favourites and Ted is another I couldn't resist clicking. So glad I did. I was having one of those self doubting days that Gilbert speaks about with much humour and large doses of humanity. She discusses the fear and anxiety that often plagues 'creatives' and discusses 'genius' in an enlightening and funny way. But most of all I loved the end where she gives a big 'ole' ole' to those who have the courage to keep getting up and turning up to do this creative thing everyday.

There I was at 8.30am weeping in my coffee at Elizabeth Gilbert's words and feeling a whole lot prouder as I trudged towards the computer.

Getting up, turning up and finishing things are our daily challenges as 'creatives' and it is tough to keep turning up. I know how hard it is to 'push a project over the line', it can feel like you are wading in knee deep mud and at any moment you risk being swallowed up.

Today I would like to celebrate three talented creative women, Elizabeth Gilbert, Kerrie Hess and Millie Brown. The later two have recently pushed two beautiful projects over the line and created beautiful art. Madame Gilbert did that with Eat, Pray, Love.

I recently met the divine illustrator Kerrie Hess and fell immediately in love with  her newly released book, Shoestring Chic, a book on how to live the luxe life. Full of her chic irresistible illustrations Shoestring Chic was recently published in America and is full of practical advice on how to look chic without spending a fortune. It will be released in Australian bookstores tomorrow or you can buy it online here. I should probably take some of her advice and get out of the combat gear and put on a shoe every now and then. Congratulations on your beautiful book.  Here is some of her elegant and poetic work!!

Another great gal, photographer Millie Brown has also finished a beautiful project called An Italian Journey. A beautiful box set of cards lovingly photographed in Italy! I had the great fortune to meet Millie (who is as lovely as her photos) last year and hear her story of changing paths to become a photographer. I was so thrilled to see her beautiful cards and inspired that her project was realised and in such a stylish way. Her cards are sold in all great giftshops in Australia but you can also buy them online here. Millie has also done a set on France. Clever Girl! Congratulations!!!

So to all of those creatives out there who are doubting yourself today, take the time to listen to Elizabeth Gilbert's speech 'Nurturning Creativity' and give yourself a pat on the back for 'turning up'..

  5. Hi Carla,
Thank you for the insightful post. It is so easy to get despondent and wonder whether all the effort we put into our creative endeavors is worth the work but without it what would we do or be? I guess just pushing on or showing up IS the answer. Keep those beautiful photos coming.

  8. Sadly I can't watch the talk just yet because I'm in the sticks with a dial up speed, but for now your words are enough to keep me skipping along the creative path. Who's life is this anyway?

  9. What a wonderful post, Carla! I have to find time to watch that TED video. Thank you for reminding me. I've heard so many good things about it. I will check out the other inspiring links as well. And yes, it's very hard to nurture creativity at times. Sometimes I think being a gardener would be preferable and far less stressful. But I do firmly believe that when you are blessed with a gift, you have to use it. xx
