Egoiste - Keira Knightley

All images copyright Ellen Von Unwerth Egoiste

Early on in my photography career I invested half-a-house in magazines and books. I have always been a magazine addict and I could build a house with my Vogue Italia's and Uomo Vogue. As the years have passed I have given myself the 24 hour rule which I have invented to assist me in still being able to enter my house instead of high jumping over the books and magazines on entry.

My 24 hour rule goes something like this. Carla walks into a shop or newsagency and leafs through a divine mag, she is oohing and ahhing at the beautiful images and within minutes wanting to race to the counter and make it hers - but no she has to wait 24 hours to see if the magazine still has the same effect on her and whether in 24 hours she really wants to make it her own.

Not much stuff passes the 24 hour rule these days (except all those divine Deborah Turbeville books) and Egoiste. For those who have never laid eyes on the photography magazine Egoiste it is eye-watering stuff. It would even pass a 48 hour rule. It comes in broadsheet sizes and it is like a portfolio for the world's biggest photographers, even the ads are amazing. The last pic here is an ad for Dyson vacuum cleaners and it was shot by Ellen Von Unwerth as were the pictures before and after this ad. The whole thing is seamless and so very easy on the eye. They only come out once every couple of years and the latest edition
of Egoiste is full of my favourites, Paolo Roversi, Donata Wenders and Ellen Von Unwerth. Ouch!!

So if there are any of you out  there who need to cut down on building a mag-house give the 24 hour rule a whirl and see what you think.

Carla xx

  1. Yes, I think I need to start a 24 hour rule, I have sooo many magazines that are taking over my house! They are my weakness :) This editorial with Kiera is beautiful xx

  2. 24 hours. 2 days. I have sometimes even given it 7 days, just to be sure. Unless of course there's an exceptional Gwen Stefani article and photoshoot.

  3. Hi Carla, I wish I could buy that legendary mag Egoiste but sadly I can't get it here in Australia. I too could build a house on my book and mag collection. I've sort of been trying to cut down dramaticly- I think your 24 hr rule is great. I;ve been getting my fix of decorating/fashion/photography by surfing people's blogs. I still buy the odd book (much less now) although I think I;ve purchased two glorious books in the last month. I don't eat out or travel so I guess that its ok every now and then. At least with books you can keep them for ages and revisit those fav pages. Still I'll apply that rule now and see if I can't reduse my spenditure just a little more! xxCorrina.

  4. Mon Dieu. These shots are amazing. Talented photographer of course, but Keira Knightley... the girl has it all. Looks, talent, personality.. and youth! I like your 24-hour rule (I tend to have the same problem with magazines, Carla.) A bientot. Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

  6. I'd love to get my hands on a copy. Grew up on Ellen's work in i-D and The Face, love it. The 24 hour rule is great. I just pass every thing onto other magazine junkies.

do you 'watermark' yr photos like Unwerth does Carla?
I'm reading such nightmares about Pinterest's copyright policy in their fine print. I'm reluctant to upload anything as it is..

  8. Just love your wonderful blog, Carla. Practical '24-hour rule' advice. Need to muster the same 'courage' for a rule on buying books. :-)

  13. Having the first ten years of Martha Stewart Living as well as countless years Victoria Magazines I think I may need to subscribe to your rule.
