Valentines Day is almost here and if you have someone you love and you want to spoil him here's my list..
Every photographer needs constant challenges to keep their style fresh. I was given this book by my valentine at Christmas (not sure whether it was a hint about my style) but I loved Chris Orwig's 30 exercises for photographing people. Helped me started 2012 with a couple more tricks in my repertoire.. If your photographer Valentine loves shooting people he will probably love People Pictures.
Why would any photographer get excited about a book with a cover like that? It's what is on the inside that is interesting not that busted orange on the outside. Speedlights are flashes that you can use on camera or off camera and once you have mastered using them off camera you can always create beautiful light wherever you are. Beats lugging around a battery and flash head. Speedlighter's Handbook tells you how to do it.
You'are probably scratching your head thinking why will a piece of black fabric win me points on Valentine's Day. Well, here's the deal, if your Valentine is a portrait photographer he can fold up this useful little length of fabric and have an instant backdrop wherever he is shooting. He doesn't need to iron it (three cheers) and it can double as a flag to block light or drap it over nasty furniture that might otherwise ruin his shot.. Black Muslin Backdrop
If your guy isn't a photographer but he is a style icon and loves cruising about town on a bike he will probably love this gorgeous Hollandia bike. I would steal it off my guy if this was his and park my camera backpack onto that tray instead of strapping it onto my poor shoulders!! Take the weight off..
If your guy is into great photography, exotic places around the world, baboon mating and lost civilisations he will love you forever if you give him a National Geographic subscription. If he loves to travel (even from the armchair) the National Geographic Traveler will rock his world..Pass me Vogue please!
Not all guys are photographers or tech-heads (thank-god) so if your guy is a gourmand or a health-nut and loves fresh juices he will probably love an Alessi Citrus Juicer his own little piece of Philippe Starck design in the kitchen ( and you may get a freshly squeezed juice with your breakfast in bed)!
If he loves to read the latest lightweight Kindle is a fabulous gift, Francesco got one in his Christmas stocking and he is constantly searching for it... whoops fell into my handbag again. Definately helps fight the 'piles of book wars' going on in our apartment!! Paperless definately has its upside..
Do you have a Valentine?

Is it bad that I'm wanting all of this stuff for me! I need that lighting book, back in film school I left the lighting to others and will take photos in the dark rather than use lighting but if I could find something transportable and easy to use I would in a heart beat. Off to read your post below.
