Crazy Colourful Paris Apartment

Copyright Carla Coulson

I remember watching Marilyn Monroe when I was about 16 in 'How to marry a Millionaire'. I had no interest in marrying a millionaire but I was taken with the idea of living in Paris in a copy cat apartment like Marilyn's. Marilyn was ensconced in one of those fabulous panelled apartments with herringbone parquetry floor and double panelled doors that would make any gals heart flip. So glam and soooo French..

That was about 100 years ago and I did move to Paris.. but not into an apartment like Marilyn's.. Instead the only one on offer was more like Austin Power's!! Prior to the 'shag pad' I was living in an attic apartment that totalled about 20m2. So when I saw the orange padded walls I didn't miss a beat.. I couldn't get the words out quick enough... I'll take it!!!!

I was home in Australia visiting one of my favourite magazines Inside Out when the art director asked me about my place. "Nooooooo wwwaaay and lots of head shaking from me..My place is a nightmare" I said. The magazine explained that they often do 'artists places'. I thought I'll mention the orange walls and that will be the end of that. Instead it was the reverse they were curious..

Well if I was gambler I certainly would have thought it was a sure bet that my place would never end up in an interiors mag!! Life is full of surprises..

Inside Out is a wonderful Australian magazine full of original content so if you have the chance to get your hands on it you will see many inspiring houses (other than mine)!!

  16. Oh, fabulous, Carla! I admit I would be put off by orange walls but you've made it look like the most perfect and chic choice. I love all the color and couldn't imagine being melancholy surrounded by such a vibrant space.

And congrats on the feature! I confess to resorting to the magnifying glass so I could read it. :) xo – g

  21. I'll be hitting the newsagent first thing in the morning, your home looks fantastic orange and all. I once was featured in Notebook magazine for a mothers day special, they ended up flying my Mum up to Brisbane from Melbourne for a photo shoot with my daughter and I. We had the best time and it was all by chance.

  24. I have been reading Inside Out since its first issue and love it. The posty doesn't deliver my subscription to our island home, so when I get back to Aus next month I will have 9 months worth of magazine bliss to catch up on - including seeing your feature. Do you think they'd be interested in a pitch about our beach shack? I'd give my left arm for a spread in their esteemed pages. Plus, let me know if you want a house swap :)
