Chasing a Dream - IT'S OUT!!!

All images from Chasing A Dream

Yesssss...My new book Chasing a Dream is finally out and stacked up on the shelves in Australia.. What I would give to be in Australia today to celebrate my joy with family, friends and fans.....

Many of you know my story but for those of you that don't I became a photographer by chance. On the eve of Christmas 1999 I was single, dissatisfied with my career and living on my own in a small apartment in Darlinghurst Sydney. As the years passed I tried to hold it all together pushing away the dissastifaction finding new ways to inject happiness into my life but just after my 35 birthday things started to fray.

When I picked up my Thai Take-away on Christmas Eve there along with my 'tofu stir-fry and veges hold the oil' was a gift. I had been voted the 'most valued' client of 1999. I was mortified - it summed up what my life had become. I knew in that moment if I didn't change something I would be living the same life when I was 60.

I have much to thank my local Thai Take-away for because if they hadn't given me that present I wouldn't be living in Paris and married to the world's most gorgeous man. That present detonated it all and and within a month I had rented out my apartment, organised someone else to take over my business and I was on a plane to Italy. Eleven years have passed since that fateful Thai meal and I feel I have had the chance to truly live life - really close to the edge sometimes!!

This adventure led me to photography and it was photography that led me to the rest.

Chasing a Dream is a celebration of finding something you are truly passionate about in life, for me that something was photography. It was like falling in love. And it was incredible to discover this passion at 35!!

In the early days I had the great fortune to work with an incredible fashion editor and her advice to me as I walked out the door to my first fashion job was to 'shoot from the heart'. Those three words sum up how I have always tried to capture a photo, full of emotion with lots of heart!

Chasing a Dream is a collection of photos, stories and emotions that are part of my journey to becoming a photographer and to finding a new way of living. It is a book full of images I love that have touched my heart, made me laugh, cry, think, love and scream yippeeee...

Though I have had the chance to work with many wonderful magazines over the years the photos I take for the pure pleasure of photography remain the most important to me and this is the essence of Chasing A Dream

To celebrate I am giving away two copies - drawn on Friday 6th November 2011 . Let me know what your dream is??

Much love and I hope you enjoy it... Carla xx

ps I hope to have a podcast this week to talk to you in depth .. The anti-tech head couldn't get it together for today.

  1. Carla! Congratulations! I'm so happy to have found you through BYW, and your story is so inspiring to me. Just seeing your photos and hearing how you've chased your dream are inspiring me to chase my own and really reach for the writing and photography goals that are only just out of my reach. They've always been there, all I have to do is hold out my hand. Thank you so much.

  3. Bonjour and felicitations! I started following your blog recently. What an inspirational story. I am glad you chose to tell it today. Chasing a dream indeed-- and all because of (thanks to?) a fateful pick up at a Thai restaurant. Life is so interesting sometimes. Congratulations to you. Much success with the new book, and, as the French say, "bonne continuation" in my country. A bientot. Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

  4. congratulations yeah ! I understand totally how excited you are on the publication of "chasing a dream".. ! I had picked up a little bit of your story, bits and pieces, from peeking at your blog from time to time.
as I was getting more and more impressed with the quality and meaning of your pictures, I became a very regular visitor and now an avid follower, looking forward to your new postings
it is fun to find out more about your story and the origins of your photography passion.
You describe your thai take-away in 1999 in such a way that I think it is touching and a bit funny at the same time.. australia is as foreign to me as one can imagine, but the thai take out at xmas eve is something that appeals to the imagination of the whole world.
anyway, I am going to buy your first book to read about your italian adventure and get to know you better.
you had a great deal of guts, fantastic sense of adventure and whatever else it takes to have taken such a big step!
congratulations with this publication, I know it will find a large audience.

My dream? I'll bet you know it without me saying it. What you probably don't know is that you made one dream a reality. I was able to meet you in person, in Paris! That lovely afternoon over coffee with Jean-luc, Peter and you will remain a very special Paris moment for me.

I will post this on my FB right this minute and then go see if I can find your book online in the US!

  21. Hey Carla. I am so looking forward to getting my hands on "Chasing a Dream". As I've mentioned before, Italian Joy has and still is a provider of great inspiration to me in the story that it tells through it's words, it's pictures, and it's presentation. I've read it and re-read it about 200 times (it never leaves my bedside table) and I look forward to discovering and rediscovering the stories and pictures in Chasing a Dream. A big congratulations to you both on the release of your "new baby" (ie: your book) and your continuing journey from finding the dream to chasing the dream to living the dream.

  26. Congrats Carla, mmm my dream, funny that I gravitate to your books and those like Viki Archer and My French Table. I would love to be living somewhere in France and if I could incorporate my love of Photography too that would be bliss. I have toyed with the idea of writing a book that features my images and have already a sketchy group of chapts and pics. I am a school teacher by trade but my love of children/people/is evident in my photography as well as decorating and interiors mmmmm to combine all that?!!! I would be like a pig in mud. I love the looks on the faces of those I photograph when we view the shots and its usually the ones that I take from the heart that are not only better but certainly make an impact- on me anyway. Would love to give a copy of your book to my Dad- he really got me going on the photoraphy road. xx Corrina.

  32. Dear Carla, whenever Ihear someone complaining for their own lives I tell you story: you have become an example.
Conratulations for your new book and thank you for the giveaway, I'll keep my fingers crossed.
To answer your question....truly I have nothing to regret or complain about but I still have a dream. When my son will be graduated, 6 more years to go, I'd love taking 1 sabbathical year, throw a few clothes in a bag , grab a laptop and start travelling. I already have plan in mind. Hubby says I'm nut and adds: " What about ME?" and I answer:"What about me then?"
I strongly feel that I'll be able to do that, stay tuned for my adventures.
I wish you a lovely day, Rosanna

I have to admit, I adore and envy your life - a photographer living in what I think is the most beautiful city in the world (this coming from a girl who lives in a city that she wishes could be just a third of Paris)!

My dream? I want to travel the world. I do. All I want to do is spend a year or two traveling everywhere, seeing all sorts of things and taking pictures of everything! :)

Congratulations! I have devoured you two previous books, and can't wait to get my hands on your new one. I have never before commented on your blog, but believe me, I am a true follower since a couple of months. A daily highlight is reading your latest post!
As for my dream? My dream would be to Chase my Dream, the same way you did, 12 years ago. You have showed us it is possible, no matter how old (or young) we are, and where ever we live. You are a great inspiration, and I hope that I will ever have to courage to Chase my Dream, which actually is to do what you did: Chase your dream!

Of course I hope I'll be one of the lucky onces to win your book, but if not, I'll certainly will buy one myself. Just one question: is your book only on sale in Australia, or can we also buy it in Europe? I haven't seen it on Amazon, but any chance of that happening in the near future?

Thanks for your lovely and inspiring pictures and for sharing your life with us.

  54. Carla,

I am so happy to hear the great news about your new book! I can only imagine how holding this book in your hands takes you on a retrospective journey back to where it all started. Thank you so much for sharing your story. It's so wonderful to hear a story about a woman in her thirties taking such a leap and risk! I just turned thirty this year, and the dream I always hold in my heart is that some day my husband, my daughter, and I will take the plunge and move to France for six months or a year. I studied abroad in Lyon, France for two months 10 years ago, and have always yearned to go back for a longer time-to become more proficient at the language and to have my husband and daughter become fluent in French...It's a dream that I refuse to let go of...

Wishing you many more dream- chasing years with your hubby at your side,

You know, that aunt that lives in New York City or even San Francisco in a loft, successful, works for herself (as a photograpgher) and has no kids of her own. Fly them out for the whole summer, spoil them to no end and teach them life lessons that they will remember for years to come. My dream is for them not to just love Auntie Nina because I'm their family but also love me for being an example and one of reasons they to excel in life!!!

Yesterday's email with the opening of" things I want to show my best friend" transported me back to that magical city. My friend since I was 11 years old is going to have a sabbatical next year in Paris, she lives in Canada, and I would love to be joining her but due to the Chritschurch earthquake that has affected us badly I am unable to if I was to win your book I could dream my days away with her through the book....Thank you for the pleasure you bring through your work and sharing of yourself. PS Italian Joy is my most favourite book ever... apart from the bible.

  60. Hi Carla,
I spent an amazing year travelling around Australia a couple of years ago, during which I stumbled upon a cosy little bookshop cafe called 'gertrude and alice' near bondi beach. Maybe you know the one I mean? This is where I found my treasured copy of 'Italian Joy'. And so began a love affair with the italy you describe so well, its people, its markets, its food, its beauty....i was very inspired by your beautiful images and story.

well, i fell in love with that little bookshop and hope to one day to open my own. A sprawling secondhand, quirky bookshop with comfy sofas and yummy fairtrade cakes. It would double as an art cafe, a creative hub with all sorts of craft, music and theatre events going on. This is my little dream, to spend my day surrounded by books and creative people.

I am really excited that you have a new book and really happy for you that you made your dream come true, keep dreaming x

  61. I really relate to "chasing a dream", it's sort of my life motto! I left Sydney to live in Italy for the past 7 years - where I met and married my husband. I spent years there trying to follow my photography/food dreams but then I realised the next path to follow was actually coming back home. So here I am - back this very week in time for my 31st birthday and ready for another adventure! Can't wait to get my hands on this book.

  62. I have been a follower of your blog since I first discovered your images in the books you have created yourself and also French Essence et al.

Being a Kiwi it is always great to read about an Ozzie gal making good and in a part of the world I have visited a couple of times now, but would be happy to return to at the drop of a hat.

Your images inspire me to dream that I can focus more on people rather than my usual fascination with architecture...so that is my dream...to capture the moments you show so beautifully of people, for myself and improve my creations in the future.

  64. Hi Carla, Congrats on your new book. Saw it in the bookstore here in Melbourne Australia and love it.

When my husband bought me Italian Joy a few years ago he made a very intuitive comment. He said “this book is going to cost more than just the $60 (or so) isn’t it? He was absolutely right! From that moment I started saving to go to Italy, which I’d always adored anyway. My family and I have just returned and we all loved it.
Questioning your passion made me question mine. It took a few years but I’ve discovered it now. I dream of teaching English to children in southern Italy or France. I love kids and am in the learning industry already. I’m doing a TSOL (teaching English as a second language) course next year.
I won’t be able to live this dream for about another 6 years (as I am raising 2 teenagers) or so and by then I will be in my early 50’s. but I believe it is NEVER TOO LATE to chase your dreams and turn them into reality.

  65. Congratulations Carla! This is so exciting! I've loved every single one of your books (including "My Amalfi Coast" which everyone seems to forget!). Hope the new one is released in the UK soon.

My dream is to see the world, have a career that I love because it fulfils me (not because it's "safe") and have a family. I've spent years caring too much about what people think, never having the confidence to believe I could do better. I had my wake up moment a few months ago and even though I am not quite where I want to be yet, I wake up every morning feeling so excited about what's in front of me. I've never felt so driven and creative before.

I have left behind a profitable job in a bank in Australia, rented out my apartment and shipped off to Europe with my lovely boy. To be honest my dream is to be a photographer but sometimes I'm too scared to even say it aloud.

  72. I have two dreams that I really can't separate in importance. The first, is to achieve success in my new career. I'm 44 and after working in banking & finance for 22 years, decided it was time to do something I was passionate about, and became a personal stylist - helping women look and feel the best they can. And secondly, my dream is to find the man of my "dreams". Thanks for encouraging me to put that down in writing.

Much success with your new book. If it's anything like Paris Tango (which has pride of place on my coffee table) it'll be lovely.

  74. Dear Carla, I just received a copy of your book in the mail and it is beautiful. Not only for the pictures but for the words you wrote. It brought back memories of the time I spent with my family in Italy recently who I had not seen for many years. Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring me to chase my dreams. xx

  75. Looking forward to seeing you book when I return to Australia - the photo of the dog jumping the cattle grid really tugs at the Aussie farm girl within. I'm living the dream of voluntary simplicity on a remote Indonesian beach with an incredible husband and sharing my joy through words and pictures. Keep spreading the love and inspiration.
