Le Havre Aki Kaurismaki - Set Inspiration

Le Havre by Aki Kaurismaki

I saw Le Havre on boxing day in Italy in a small art house cinema and loved it.. My cinema guru friend Zazie has been speaking in glowing terms of Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki for some time and this was my first Kaurismaki film. Zazie knows her stuff, this is the girl that takes a week off work to attend the Finnish film festival in Paris and sees back to back films all day! Brava Zazie..

Le Havre is a tender film full of beauty and hope. Marcel Marx an ex-writer down on his luck is now shining shoes in the French port of Le Havre. Marcel helps a young immigrant African boy escape the authorities around the same time his wife is diagnosed with cancer. Sounds depressing hey! It's not.

There is much to love about this film, the beautiful French sets had my photographers heart thudding, the wonderful personalities living simple but difficult lives yet still showing extraordinary kindness and tenderness to one another.

This film was a 50's inspired feast for my photographer's eyes. I devoured the wonderful sets, the spartan kitchen, the local bar and the incredible attention to detail within each frame.  The sets tell their own story.  I also adored the wonderul colour palettes and the rich velevety colours. So much incredible inspiration for a photographer!!

Le Havre is an uplifting film and there is a wonderful twist at the end that I didn't expect..I loved this film.

  1. I have not yet seen this film but given your review, it is now on my list.
I was first introduced to his work at the NY Film Festival years ago, The Man Without A Past. We can thank Cannes for bringing him to our (New York's) attention and now you for reminding us that his brilliant work continues. It is all about word of mouth.
