Paris - Scouting for a location

All Photos by Carla Coulson

Morning Lovelies,

This is going to be short and sweet today because the Paris sales start today and Carla needs to get herself out of the apartment and into 50 percent off land.

You may recall Monday that I mentioned that I am shooting a night fashion story next week. As Carla loves to be organised I always scout my locations before the big day. There is nothing worse than dragging around a team of models, stylists, make-up artists and assistants not knowing where you are going. And when you arrive at the chosen spot and it isn't as one imagined you then need to convince your crew to walk another 1km to the next location. Ouch!!

To avoid all of this I scout. I love to scout so the shoot runs smoothly.

What I learnt by scouting the above locations?

1. Some backdrops have a better balance of street lamp light
2. Other backdrops offer more image that will go with my story
3. Some are just too dark

My Tip: If you live in a city like Paris and you don't have lots of time to scout let your fingers do the walking. I check out books like Yvon's Paris, Paris Mon Amour and Elliott Erwitt's Paris to see what locations these great photographers have shot in.

Keep Shooting... I am off to the sales

Carla xx

  1. I would think it's lots of fun to search Paris at night for work. These are beautiful, Carla. I love the one of the guy walking in front of the cafe.

  2. Hi Carla, a wealth of info in all your posts lately. I think I have to go back and re-read a few. I know when I have a clear idea of the shoot I want to do, and go where I know the light will be the best for that look/story, I get my best photos. My goal now is to be even more organised- create a story board of inspiration and scout new and interesting locations. xxCorrina.

  3. Hi Carla, I have been loving your latest series of posts. I has really inspired me to take action. I love architecture and fashion. I have decided to gear up my architecture business again and brush off the old photograpy gear. Without creating a two page comment, thankyou for providing the tools to find some clarity.

  8. Hey Carla, this just shouts "fun". Love your dark, atmopsheric Paris shots. Just saw Midnight in Paris which I quite liked, so that and these photos make me yearn to get back. I look forward to seeing your actual shoot (if you are so inclined to show us!).

  9. Wonderful atmospheric photographs Carla, they really have an ageless mood. I am working on some nocternal paintings of Sydney at the moment, and learning from your mastery of tonal change & control of lighting.
    Cheers

  11. I love the images where the streets are wet and the lights from bars or lamplights are reflected. Perhaps that's cliché, but I like it!
