Piazza Signoria Florence Carla Coulson
I arrived in Florence on a hot August night in the
year 2000. I remember walking through the lamp lit streets feeling as though I
had little champagne bubbles in my blood. A whole month in Italy! I felt like
hugging myself with happiness. Chris de Burgh’s song ‘Lady in Red’ was playing
softly in one of the cafes facing onto Piazza
Signoria and the first of many well dressed waiters called ‘Ciao Bella’ to
me. It had been years since anyone had paid
me a compliment and a little spark of the woman that had along ago died inside
sprang to life.
I didn’t realise at the time but it was the first
day of a new life.
Falling in love with Italy for me was love at
first sight. I loved everything about Italy the crumbling buildings, the
beautiful men, the elegant well-dressed women, coffee, the food, the language, the passion packed into every sculpture
and the incredible humanity of the Italians. That night I unpacked my bags in a
small pensione in the heart of Florence
that looked like a movie set from the war years and waited for my first day at
Italian school so excited I could hardly sleep.

But something extraordinary happened to me. Italy
got under my skin and the longer I stayed the more I fell in love with the
Italian way of living. The idea of going back to my life as a single girl in
Sydney was out of the question. Life took me on another path. Sometimes I feel
as though Italy scooped me into her arms and looked after me. That mother Italy
decided “well this girl really does need a new life and I am going to be the
one to help her”.
Next week I am off again to Italy, the champagnes
bubbles are already flowing in my blood at the thought of touchdown in my
favourite country. My dog eared copy of Henry James's Italian Hours is in my bag. The long list of all the things I want to eat and see, the
conversations I want to have and to speak the language I love so dearly. And to be in a place that loves me.
Some love affairs last a lifetime and I know Italy
and I have many more years to rest contentedly in each other’s arms.

Bellissima Carla!! I fell in love with several cities and an island, not a country yet. Paris, Roma, Verona, and Sicilia. The food, scenery, wine bars, way of life, ruins, old architecture.. too many to list but I'm sure you know what I mean :)

Hi Carla, I'm in love with France but I haven't actually been yet- I get those champagne bubbles in my blood whenever I hear the language, music or see images- rural or city! I must say I like those butt cheeks on the statue in the first shot! I can see what you mean about Italian men- belissamo! xxCorrina.
ReplyDeleteI love hearing your indepth tales of how you felt when you began your journey of what would one day be your new life in Italy then Paris and as a working phtographer...
ReplyDeleteI have fallen in love with many places; Paris, Tuscany, Venice, a few places in Spain & in Chile. I feel I have so much more to discover & many more places to fall in love with.

All your posts have been so inspiring lately Carla! I'm planning to spend a month in Italy in May learning Italian before a friend's wedding in Tuscany in June. I've taken lessons in Sydney but it's not the same. I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful images and beautifully written words, Carla. I went to Italy for the first time last summer and just loved it - a sensory overload!
ReplyDeleteLove this post - a little slice from my favourite book - Italian Joy . A favourite I might add, long before I started blogging and found you here. Francesca
ReplyDeleteTo answer your last question: Yes, you can fall in love with a country ... and in my case, Italy is certainly one of them! ... and I'm definitely ready to now and then replace the chamagne by a prosecco spumante! :-)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! And yes, I've fallen in love with a country, actually with two. First, with Greece where I lived and studied for a year. Mere memories make me happy and I keep traveling back to the Land of Light. Second, France. The country I am traveling most frequently due to love and good friends:-) Igor xoxo
ReplyDeleteHi Carla, this post definitely resonates with me! I completely understand your love affair with Italy, it is just magical and exactly how I always dreamt it will be and more. But for me, I fell completely in love with Spain when I stayed in Barcelona for a few months. The lifestyle, the beach, the culture, the food, the people.. it just crept under my skin and stayed there. It was like everything I loved from Sydney wrapped up with everything I loved from Europe. Ever since then I have been trying desperately to learn the language and move there! It will happen one day. I keep going back, each time the plane touches down I feel the same champagne bubbles in my blood too...
ReplyDeleteP.S. I finally got my hands on a copy of your feature in InsideOut magazine, bought in London Selfridges no less! :)

even though I have other trips planned for the coming weeks, months..and even though I can not go to Italy as often as I would like to , the love affair survives !
ReplyDeleteI can get the flavor by speaking (or trying) the language, looking at Italian magazines, eating out in one of the zillions italian restaurants in Belgium and reading the books you suggest.;)
I love Italy too! My husband and I were married in Positano last June and we are in the process of planning another trip to Italy this summer. :)
ReplyDeleteI am in love with Italy, France + Los Angeles, CA...enough said. Thank you sweet Carla. xxpeggybraswelldesign.com
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful post Carla, I love this glimpse into your past. Italy is my love affair too. I went back to Florence after a summer in art school when I finished college and missed my flight back for grad school, embroiled in a love affair...but finally did return home months later. It changed the course of my life and of course, any time I return I always get the same feeling. How wonderful that you are going back!

Carla, this post was so amazing, I felt like I was right there with you as you made your first steps in Italy. If France has still not claimed my heart after ten years of living here, as much as I appreciate it, it is probably because Italy had it first. :)
ReplyDeleteGreece is that country for me. Of those I've been to at least. It felt like coming home. Italy has much allure and I'd love to go there...your blog posts make it even more appealing. And Paris, there's always Paris!
ReplyDeleteAs I have never been to Italy, I'm not sure whether I would like it or not. There are certainly some photogenic places to look at. All the old buildings and statues.
ReplyDeleteI've always thought of moving back to London. I was a young boy in the 70s then. But maybe it is not so good now as it was then. Certainly some opportunities to do different things though
Nice buns, anyone I might know? :)
ReplyDeleteAnd if Peter is trading champagne, I think I want to be along for that ! :)

O Carla, I fell for Italy over 20 years ago. I fell in love with Italy and one divine Italian and in the space of a week my life had changed forever. I've never gotten over either of them!! I'm there at the drop of a hat. i've spent a fortune getting there and staying there as long as I can in between 'stints' in Australia. And I wouldn't have it any other way. Your post zoomed me back in time, as did your gorgeous book a few years ago. Grazie di cuore Carla. Jx
ReplyDeleteBellissimo post e complimenti per le tue foto.
