Changing Lives

Lia leaving for the New World Copyright Carla Coulson

Hello Lovelies,

It's been so long I could hardly remember how to log on to Blogger! Shame on me.

I could blame it on so many things, comings and goings, deadlines and deadends, photos, photos and more photos and of course a long gorgeous summer. But I guess I am the one to blame....

On Saturday in the cobbled streets of the Beauborg, Francesco and I farewelled dear friends, a Frenchman (gorgeous) and his divine Italian wife and their two edible little girls who were leaving for the New World (Australia).

Their dream had become a reality.

For the past year in cosy dark Parisian restaurants we planned their  'escape'.  I can tell you it hasn't been easy. They went ten rounds with the Australian bureacracy and had a couple of knockouts. They crawled back into the ring for some more and allowed their French counterparts to body slam them on the ropes whilst searching for the 'non-existant' document. And lets face it, if anyone can bring you to your kness crying and snizzling over a bit of paper, the French can.

In the depths of winter when they had lost all hope of ever being granted the magical visa and it looked like the bureacrats on both sides of the world would win, our friends would log onto the Bondi Beach live cam to watch the rolling waves and fantasise about the sky blue water and a new life.

Then one day, I received a phone call. My divine friend was babbling so quickly I couldn't understand a word she said. In the forest of words I heard 'visa' and 'going'! They had it. They had won the war and they were off to a new life. I was thrilled for them but devastated for us. We loved these guys, they lived around the corner from us and they were such a big part of our lives. Ouch, I knew this was going to hurt.

We were still reeling from the last exodus to Australia, another couple and their small children who had departed almost a year ago. We reasoned that they were Aussies but our French mate and his Italian wife who were courageously moving to the other side of the world with no friends or family?

Goodbyes are always hard and I am the worst. I just need to think about the event, days, weeks or months in advance and I am in tears. I took my Leica, I figured one day when the kids were big and they were all  happy old Australians it would be great to a have shot of their last moment in Paris in the streets were they onced lived.

This pic of Lia was taken as the taxi was pulling out and I was choking on my sobs. I howled for their courage, for their determination and our wonderful friendship and the knowledge of what a great life they will have in Australia..I started to walk away and as I turned around for the last wave there was Lia looking out the taxi window with buildings reflected in the glass. In a split second and almost breaking a long jump record I went back for this one last shot.
I have sinced found out my Leica is tear proof!

Bon voyage mes amis

Carla xx

  3. Carla,

What a beautifully written account of friendship. Unfortunately, in friendship, "les adieux" et "les au revoirs" sont nécessaires...

This photo means even more now knowing the story behind it.

It is okay to cry-Crying confirms a love you have for someone other than yourself-the most beautiful part of friendship.

  4. Yes, beautifully written, filled with emotion and the defining moment captured forever. Marvelous, Carla!

I was in Paris twice this summer – gave you a little wave over the rooftops from our petit balcon in the Marais.

Hope all is well and that you are not too sad. Hopefully you can see your friends when you next visit Australia. :)

  9. Carla, your friends won't be alone in Australia.... if there is anything they need help with they can get in touch. We are in QLD, my husband is Italian and speaks the language fluently, we have lived in Italy so know exactly what they will be missing, and we have young children.

I remember when we first left Australia for Italy and although I was sad to leave I was so excited to be going. Friendships survive even the longest distances and now they will know your homeland.

Your photo is just heartbreaking, they have very special friends in you both. My email is lisa at renovatingitaly dot com and please tell them not to be shy if there is anything we can help with we would be happy to do so, so many people took us under their wings when we arrived in Italy.
ciao and glad to see you back

  10. Change is never easy but what a story - of adventure and heartbreak. You captured it all so beautifully in that one photo.
I certainly understand how important documents are to the French having lost my passport in Paris...

  16. This post arrived in my mailbox yesterday and I woke at 6am this morning thinking about it. So moving. My friends in Florence will be saying goodbye to their 3 year old grand-daughter who will also be moving to Australia in another month, so this very sadness has been on my mind. This photograph will be a part of Lia's treasures forever.

  18. Lovely words Carla and beautifully photographed. That gorgeous little face of Lia's is exquisite. New adventures bring hardships and happiness.

As you yourself and many others who have moved across the world know (me included) ... it is well worth it! However, it is always hard to lose dear friends.

    Glad you are back!

  20. Wonderful capture of a moment in time - I'm trying to read the emotion in her face - is it trepidation - partly wanting to go but with just a hint of sadness - leaving the familiar.
On my flight home from Melbourne last week Carla I was delighted to open the Virgin inflight magazine and see your amazing photos - Wow! no one capture the real Paris like you do - looking from the Pont Alexandre iii toward the Tour Eiffel is just magical!
It put a smile on my face.

  21. I love stories like this! You and your friends are such an inspiration.

Everything you wrote about is evident in your photo. I love that right in the corner, "bienvenue" is visible.

  22. Hello you!
Same things can be remembered when we decided to depart rainy Vancouver for Perth. Two little girls in tow... Promises were made about Australia...but we were sooo afraid.
13 years later we couldn't be happier. We are addicted to our place in Kalamunda WA! But guess what?
I am going to France in 1.5 week and you Tango book seemes to guide me the best. Good work Carla, your hard work proved to be an inspiration for a girl (52) like me. Are you still in Paris?
